The Kandy Esala Perahera is one of the most glamorous religious festivals in Sri Lanka that is associated with the temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic – ‘Sri Dalada Maligawa’.
This ‘Perahera’ (Procession) is held annually as a homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic and consists of many traditional dance performances including, whip-crackers, fireball dancers, ‘Hewisi’ drummers in addition to the beautifully dressed majestic elephants that becomes a highlight for the audience. Eye-catching performances of the Kandian dancers is a must see at this event.
The Kandy Esala Perahera lasts for ten days. It takes place in July or August according to the dates of the full moon.
